I don't make RPG's and I'm currently trying to test a game where the background is not made as tiles. It's an entire picture.

Is there a way to just import an entire picture as your background instead of using tiles? For example, how do I just import a 1280x720 picture as my gameboard?

What you are looking for is the Layer Background button. If you have ribbon, It's the 4th button in Layer Tools of the Map tab. If you don't have ribbon, click the layer's name in the map toolstrip and click on Layer Background.

You can add a background for each layer.

When I got to test game, I only get a black screen.

Did you set the map as the starting screen? You can set it in the project settings.

I'm going to make this simpler for 0.9.2. I also made adding background simpler, just drag and drop the image from materials explorer on to the layer.

Yep, works now. But I am concerned about a couple of things:

1. I don't like that it forced me to save in order to make the background picture show. That can present a ton of problems if you don't want to make a save at a specific point. The previewing of your work should be live and in real-time like what you'd find with MMF2 or Construct.

2. Needing to click "Apply" then "Ok", then "Ok" again, then "Test game", then "Yes" in the save window in order to see the changes reflected during test game is not something I would consider intuitive. It would be best to streamline this entire operation to the point where I can just make a change and click "Test game" and see the changes made, and then separately choose to click the "Save Project" icon in the top left IF I'm happy with the changes.

I see your point. I'll add it to 0.9.3. Although I'm not sure if "real-time" would be possible, can you define "real-time"? I can easily make it so you do not need to save to test by saving in a temporary directory. Thanks.

Sorry for the delay in my reply.

Anyway, real-time wasn't the best choice of terms on my part. What I meant to say is... say you've placed a square inside the layout. You then take your mouse and move the square 100 pixels to the left, or you resize the square, or do something else to it. You should be able to just click "Test Game" and see those changes reflect in the Test Game window, without needing to save it first.
