Hey guys, I'm Klokinator from RRR. I'm here to inspect and ripoff critique. Okay but seriously, this is one of the few GM's that I actually like that is indie in nature, so I'm gonna stick around and see how it matures. I'm mostly going to watch and see how it pans out as far as resources, available good stuff, and other such stuff like that. I'm looking to make a TBS and while I'll likely end up waiting a whole year for Bwd to make his Fire Emblem RMXP game and release a kit, something to do in the meantime would be fun :)

And Michael Jackson is awesome.

You can transfer just about ANY RPG Maker related resource so there's no resource shortage what so ever.

Right now it's sort of annoying me because it constantly (CONSTANTLY) crashes. I can just barely start to work on a map then BAM there's a crash.

I'm currently trying to import Fire Emblem tilesets into it to see what an FE map would look like. We will see.

Edit: I'm not even kidding d'oh! this is pretty frustrating. Maybe it's just that the current release isn't stable yet, but this is a little depressing. I'll try running it as admin, but I doubt that'll fix my problems. The next release might be more stable so I'll have to wait until then.

My computer specs according to the (very new) sticker on the laptop:
Intel Pentium Processor P6100
2.0 GHZ 3MB L3 Cache
Intel HD Graphics
3GB DDR3 Memory
250 GB HDD

It's an Acer Aspire 7741Z-4643 Entry Level model. No Dedicated RAM or anything like that but I've never had any problems and I've owned it since Black Friday.

On a sidenote, IDK if it's just me but the menu layout seems really cluttered and confusing. Maybe other people don't have troubles but it's really confusing.

And I'll include the error log. Gimme a few minutes to upload to FS site.

Edit: IDK which of the two you wanted so here's the bigger one. (It was a 423 KB file VS 3 KB so I assume the 423 KB file is the correct one.)

You can attach it by clicking Attach on your post. As far as the menu layout, which menu?
and I'm assuming you are using windows 7?

I'll try and elaborate a bit on the menu confusion I'm having.

My very simple goal for my first activity to do, was to grab a Fire Emblem tileset I have that I obtained from the Game Maker community, and import it to the tilesets, and then make a simple map. Nothing like events or anything like that, I just wanted to see what I could do and make a simple map.

I imported the tileset, no problems. I made a new map, no problems. I changed the tile size from both the map and the tileset to 17X17 pixels wide, still no problems. Then at some point I was trying to figure out how to "paint" the tiles onto the map and it crashed.

The thing is, there's 4 tabs at the top of the screen (Main, View, Release, and Help) and inside those tabs are a shit ton of buttons.

Inside the Main tab is the Maps and Tilesets button, but inside the View tab are tileset and map explorer buttons. I can't tell half the time which button I'm supposed to click, just out of those selections. IMO if there was an option to compact the Main and the View tabs together, I'd be happier cause then I wouldn't have to switch so often. (The little windows that pop out on the side are more confusing because I can't figure out how they're assigned over there, and if I (accidentally) remove one of them, I can't get it back. Except by clicking around on the other 100 buttons hoping I click the right one.

For a final release, when this whole thing is completed, it would be AWESOME if there were some kind of fully and 100% guided demonstration of how to maneuver around in the editor. That little tutorial off to the right side (no offense meant) just doesn't work for me. As I said, the layout seems to be a bit confusing, or maybe I'm just really stupid. :l

Edit: I couldn't upload .xml files with the default forum uploader though which is why I had to use rapidshare.

Actually, there are video tutorials you can check out (go to youtube.com/expressgamemaker). Also, is there a second error log with your name? It should be something like Klokinator_ErrorLog.

Also for mapping, when you click the map a menu with the tools should appear. I'll try and come up with a better solution, I don't fancy the current way for the map tools menu either, i have a few ideas already.

As far as view goes, you don't actually have to close any tabs, if you keep the ones you use often, its actually a lot easier to use.

That should be the one I uploaded. http://rapidshare.com/fi...198/Error_2011-1-24.xml

And like I said, however YOU the creator of this engine decide to make it, you should try and think about a fully fledged walk around like baby steps tutorial. Otherwise it won't be noob friendly. (I'm not reallt a noob though coding goes right over my head. I use VX extensively, but this layout is completely new and like I said, it's confusing.)

Edit: Wait, I did upload the wrong one I think. Gimme a min.

Not sure what you are referring to here.

Also, yes, it is different from other game makers, a lot more editors for example. It's actually a lot simpler to use once you get used to it, I've used other game maker's before (pretty much all of them) and I know how new interfaces can be daunting. I had a hard time switching from Widnows Live mail to Thunderbird or from Paint .Net to Photoshop due to interface differences. However, we need much more feedback so we can improve EGM :) if you can take our survey (can be found in your Account > Surveys) after a few days, it would be great. The idea is to balance the learning curve while being practical, Blender 3D users can understand what this means.

I'll try and sort out your crash problem, if you can grab a screenshot when it crashes again, it would be great. Edit: thanks for the log, I will let you know soon, I'm taking the day off tomorrow though.

Yes I took a look at it but I need to know a few things. Did you receive an error when adding a tileset? Also, you are also having graphic card problems. Unfortunately, I won't be able to try and fix any of them until next update. I will definitely look in to it.

I had multiple errors multiple times in multiple ways. I had errors when adding tilesets, when startring new maps, when trying to write the tiles to the map, and sometimes I'd even get an error when I wasn't doing anything in particular. (Like when it was just sitting on my map doing nothing, I walked away from the PC, and then I came back and my map had turned into this white box with a giant red X going from corner to corner.)

And am I to understand that my computer itself cannot play this, or did you mean something else?

No, it is not your computer but I think it has to do with compatibility with your graphics card which is a problem on our end, not yours.

Oh okay. I'm glad you figured it out :)

So at ome point this engine WILL work on my computer, which is a huge plus. All I needed to know.
